Austin, Texas is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the United States. You can assume most place are dog-friendly, as long as there is a patio area. Wherever you take your dog, expect plenty of compliments, petting, and complimentary water bowls!
This 48-hour itinerary is perfect for both owner and dog to enjoy the city of Austin. It’s great for outdoor enthusiasts and foodies as well. Your pup can tag along for the whole itinerary, if you choose. We opted to let Marvin nap for certain excursions since he wears out easily.
Where to Stay in Austin
I highly recommend a dog-friendly Airbnb. It’s a great affordable option, especially if you will have your car with you. We had a phenomenal host who treated our pup very well! See where we stayed here: Garden Bedroom – Bungalows for Rent in Austin
How to Get Around
If you have your dog with you, I’m assuming you will also have your car. We drove, and it was very easy to get around and saved us a lot of money. We didn’t have to pay to park anywhere, so no need to worry about that either!
Day 1: Hiking, Happy Hour & Rainey St.
- Breakfast: Sour Duck Market
- Start your day off with a fresh croissant and tasty iced coffee. The outdoor patio has a great vibe that you and your dog will love.
- Hiking: Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail
- Does your dog love the water? There are so many great spots to introduce your dog into swimming on this trail.
- Lunch: Torchy’s Tacos
- The Independent was the best taco I’ve EVER had in my life. It has fried mushrooms as the base, and I’m not even a huge fan of mushrooms. I’m drooling writing this…
- Nap because you and pup will need it!
- Hop around happy hours (Mon – Fri) on South Congress Ave.
- Guero’s Taco Bar: 3 – 6 PM. $2 off margaritas. $2 domestic beers. $1 off chili con queso. Live music nightly.
- Perla’s: 3 – 6 PM. 50% off lobster rolls and bottles of rosé. 50¢ off oysters. $2 off cocktails and beer.
- June’s All Day: 4 – 6 PM. 25% off food. 50% off sparkling wines. $2 off other drinks.
- Lucky Robot: 4:30 – 6 PM. 50% off cool apps, bites & select bottles of sake/wine. $1 off Central Texas beer.
- Watch the bats fly out from under South Congress Bridge at sunset
- End the night on Rainey Street
- Container Bar (not dog-friendly)
- Unbarlievable (not dog-friendly)
- Half Step & Little Lucy’s Mini Donuts
- Javelina
- Craft Pride
Day 2: Kayaking, Dog Park & Beer Garden
- Breakfast: Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden
- Home of the manmosa! We didn’t make it here during our stay, but we wish we had. You’ll have to let me know how it is.
- Lady Bird Lake Hike-And-Bike Trail
- Where city and nature meet…you’ll find stunning views walking the trail here.
- Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake: Live Love Paddle for rentals
- I kayaked for the first time on this lake, and it was a breathtaking experience. One side of the lake is set with urban views, and the other side is a nature-filled cove.
- Lunch: True Food Kitchen
- If you like the sound of a plant-based meal with seasonal produce, then you have to eat lunch here.
- Go home, shower, and relax. You and pup deserve a break!
- Yard Bar = dog park + bar + food
- First and foremost, Yard Bar is a dog park with attentive Bark Rangers to make sure everyone is having fun. The craft beer, full bar, and food makes the experience that much more enjoyable. When we took Marvin, he was a bit shy at first, but then he had the best time and made plenty of friends. It was so fun watching him interact with other dogs.
- Dinner: Elizabeth Street Cafe
- This Vietnamese and French fusion restaurant is a must! I don’t think you could be disappointed with anything on the menu. I recommend the Vietnamese Wonton Soup, Fried Shrimp and Yam Fritters, and Singapore Noodles.
- Bar: Easy Tiger Bake Shop & Beer Garden
- The pretzel and beer cheese was absolutely delicious! So was the Strawberry Lemonade cocktail and local beer.
