I’m giving you 7 unique things to do in Chicago according to locals. Shoutout to my boyfriend’s cousin for not only letting us crash on his couch in Chicago but also showing us all of the hidden gems. I compiled a list of some of the most unique and memorable places we went to. This is a guide for an “off the beaten path” Chicago experience. Don’t forget the must-see sights, but these shouldn’t be forgotten either!
Punch Bowl Social
First of all, this is the most Instagrammable place in Chicago. Second of all, most people don’t know that, so have a field day taking all of the pictures you want! They serve food, adult milkshakes, and – wait for it – ….punchbowls. They also have games including bowling, so prepare to spend some time here playing like a kid!
Blind Barber
This hidden speakeasy appears to be a barber shop. I love the theatrics of this, so it’s worth a visit for a drink or two. There are plenty of great bars in the area, so don’t stay too long.
High Five Ramen
Make sure you get there at 4:30pm to get in when they open at 5! If not you may be on the waitlist for 2 hours. If you come later than 5, expect to be on a 3 hour waitlist. Don’t worry about the wait though if you aren’t starving! This ramen joint is in the basement of a meat co. that serves up drinks and a chill environment. You could also enjoy a stroll around the neighborhood while you wait.
Hot Woks Cool Sushi
After visiting Cloud Gate (aka The Bean), you may want a quick bite to eat; however, the restaurants nearby tend to be pricey…except Hot Woks Cool Sushi. This was very standard sushi pricing, and it was absolutely delicious. It was also packed at lunchtime, so the locals must agree that it’s the place to go.
The Signature Lounge on the 96th Floor (Instead of the Skydeck)
Skip the Skydeck and get cocktails on the 96th floor of the John Hancock Tower. Yes, you’ll miss the totally amazing Instagram shot, but I promise you’ll enjoy your time better this way. The view is stunning, you spend a longer time enjoying the view, and of course, drinks are involved. Pro tip: The best view of the city is in the women’s bathroom here.
Kingston Mines (Instead of the Green Mill)
Looking for the Blues scene? All travel guides will point you to the Green Mill for its history, but you can find locals at Kingston Mines. And if you’re a student, you can get in for free with your student card!
Lao Sze Chuan in Chinatown
Are you as obsessed with Chinese food as me? Because this restaurant will not disappoint! It’s located right in Chinatown surrounded by Chinese shops with imported treats. Spend some time walking around after to burn off that delicious meal and learn more about Chinese culture.
I hope you make it to some of these places when you visit! Some other places I suggest that are more known include: Millennium Park, Navy Pier, a Bulls game, the Magnificent Mile, Lou Malnati’s, Stan’s Donuts, and Lincoln Park Zoo.
If you’ve been to any of my suggestions, let me know what you thought in the comments! Feel free to contact me on Instagram or here for any questions about visiting Chicago.
